Bamenda: Journalists Commit to Change Approach in Conflict Sensitive Reporting

Some 25 media practitioners drawn from different media backgrounds in the North West, have been schooled on ways to make reports void of hate while upholding core journalistic principles.

This was during a two day workshop on Media for Peace organized by #DefyHateNow which kick-started Friday July 30 and ended Saturday July 31 at the Bamenda Hilltop Hotel.

Speaking at the begining of the training, the Country Manager for Defyhatenow Cameroon Mr. Ngala Desmond, pointed out that the ongoing crisis in the North West and South West Regions have far reaching consequences especially with recorded loss of lives and the destruction of property, and so to compound this already deplorable situation his organization deemed it necessary to organise this training on conflict-sensitive reporting to imbibe into journalists, skills on how they can better influence and lead the society towards the path of peace through their media activities.

Eugene Nforngwa, a Media for Social Change Specialist, having drilled the participants on conflict sensitive reporting, peace journalism, mitigating hate speech just to name a few, he expects them to always understand the power they have in situations of conflict and to use that as an advantage to sharpen the way that they report that minimize the negative impact of the conflict.

The Media practitioners on their while expressing gratitudes for such an initiative taken by #DefyHateNow, promised to put all they’ve gathered to practice and to always assess the negativism that comes with a conflict sensitive issues in particular in order to shift their reporting that minimises harm.

The next workshop on same subject matter it should be noted has been programmed to take place in the Center Region in the days ahead.
